UCO Gets Back On Track

EDMOND (Oct. 14) – Ericka Scholl was on serve for 18 points to help spark Central Oklahoma to a bounce-back win over Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Northwest Missouri Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 7-ranked Bronchos -- who had a school-record 17-match winning streak snapped by Missouri Western Friday night -- picked up their 17th sweep of the season with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 victory, improving to 21-2 overall and 8-1 in the league.  The Bearcats fell to 11-10 and 5-3.

"We didn't play particularly well, but did enough to get the win," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Last night was a tough match that took a lot out of us and we struggled to get going offensively.  I'm proud of the girls for fighting through it and doing what we needed to do."

Scholl was a big key for UCO as she constantly kept NWMSU off-balance during her turn on serve while also recording three aces.  The freshman put UCO in command early in the third set when the Bronchos reeled off nine straight points during her serve in taking a 10-0 lead en route to closing out the match.

Taylor Bevis had a team-high 12 kills for Central and Jordan Spence had eight kills with no errors in 14 attacks for a .571 hitting percentage while adding three assisted blocks and two aces.  Haley Deschenes added six kills.

The Bronchos trailed 8-6 in the first set before scoring six unanswered points to take the lead for good at 12-8, with Spence and Malia Kaaiohelo teaming up for two blocks in that stretch.

NWMSU led most of the early going in the second set before UCO moved it front, but it was close throughout.  UCO was up 20-19 before Spence and Karyn Chrisman combined for a block and then Scholl was on serve for a 4-0 run that ended it.

The Bronchos then jumped out to the 10-0 third-set advantage and stayed safely in front as Bevis recorded six kills and Deschenes four.

UCO starts a three-match conference road-swing next weekend, going to Lindenwood Oct. 20 and No. 20-rated Central Missouri Oct. 21.
