UCO downed by Missouri Western

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to Missouri Western at Tom Thompson Field Friday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

The Bronchos fall to 5-6-2 on the season and 2-2-2 in league play.

"We didn't play like we wanted it today and that's a little disappointing," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "We had control of this game for most of the first half, but when they scored to open the second half, we got pretty down. You can't do that if you want to win."

UCO went to the locker room tied 0-0 and had outshot Missouri Western 7-2. The Bronchos looked in control, had possession most of the half, and kept the ball on the right side of the field. But UCO couldn't punch in a goal. The Bronchos managed one shot on goal in the half.

As the second half begun, Missouri Western scored quick. In just the 48th minute, the Griffons sent in a cross and Bridget Blessie headed home the score to make it 1-0.

The Bronchos nearly responded perfectly. Just seconds later, UCO got the ball downfield, and a cross past the keeper gave Falyn Dodd a wide-open shot on goal.

A hard tackle in the penalty area left UCO without a shot on the play. And the Bronchos never recovered.

Missouri Western scored again in the 77th when Blessie took a free kick to pass to Cassidy Menke, who scored her league-leading 12th goal of the season. Sydney Cluck punched in the final score of the match in the 86th.

UCO and Missouri Western ended the game tied on shots taken, 8-8. The Bronchos only put one on goal in each half – Morgan Cherry in the first and Callie McLaughlin in the second.

Kaitlyn Asher played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos, and made two saves on the day. She fell to 1-4-2 on the season in goal.

The Bronchos return to action on Sunday, hosting Northwest Missouri State at 1 p.m.
