UCO gets MIAA road win over Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Josh Holliday used a career night at the free throw line to propel Central Oklahoma to a 78-70 road win over Lincoln in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action on Thursday night.

Holliday scored 28 points, one short of his career high. The sophomore from Broken Arrow also made 13 of 14 free throws, which was a career high, to give the Bronchos (9-4, 4-1) their second win in a row.

"Josh gets after it," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "When he gets going like that, it puts us in pretty good shape. I think everyone feeds off that because we got some pretty good games out of a lot of guys tonight."

The Bronchos went back and forth with Lincoln all night Thursday. The game featured 14 ties and 16 lead changes, the last coming with 3:09 to play in the game as Marquis Johnson put UCO up 69-67 with a layup. Johnson finished with 11 on the night.

UCO shot 51 percent from the floor Thursday. It's the eighth time this season the Bronchos have shot 50 percent in a game. UCO is 7-1 in those games.

The Bronchos got big games from the bigs Thursday. Corbin Byford finished with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks. Jake Hammond finished with eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Hammond's second blocked shot was a big one.

Shortly after Johnson's layup put UCO ahead for good, Hammond blocked a Richie Lewis layup. Byford grabbed the rebound and Lincoln fouled Holliday trying to recover as UCO broke down the court. Holliday sank both free throws.

Lincoln missed a 3-pointer on the other end. Then Hammond picked up his final two points with a layup to put UCO up 73-67.

Lincoln picked up three free throws in two trips to the line before Holliday put the icing on the cake.

With 35 seconds to play, Holliday split through traffic on his way to the basket, and despite being fouled as he went up for the layup, Holliday got the score and the foul. He sank his 13th free throw of the night to make it 76-70.

After a missed desperation three from Lincoln, Johnson hit the final two free throws of the game to make it 78-70.

UCO continues its two-game MIAA road trip Saturday. The Bronchos play at Lindenwood at 3:30 p.m. before returning to Edmond.

UCO only plays two home games in the month of January. Those are next Thursday, Jan. 12 against Emporia State, and Saturday, Jan. 14 against Washburn.
