Bronchos drop close conference clash with Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Central Oklahoma hit a cold spell in the final minutes of Saturday's MIAA game at Lindenwood and lost 67-65, snapping a two-game winning streak for the Bronchos.

UCO battled back from a narrow deficit late in the second half to take a 65-60 lead. Lindenwood went 5:45 without scoring as the Bronchos looked poised to steal a road win.

But after Marquis Johnson's layup with 4:31 to play, UCO went cold. The Bronchos only got two more free throws the rest of the game and missed its final five shots from the floor in the loss.

"That's a tough finish," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "To be in the position we were and not be leaving with a win is frustrating."

Lindenwood's Jackson Price hit a 3-pointer with 7:44 to play to put the Lions up 60-58. Jake Hammond made 1 of 2 free throws with 7:10 to play to make it a one-point game. Then both teams went cold, with nobody scoring for the next few minutes.

UCO's Josh Holliday broke the short drought with a layup with 5:09 to play, then Johnson put the Bronchos up 63-60 with his layup. Jordan London made two free-throws with 2:53 to play to make it a five-point game.

But after not being able to score for more than five minutes, Lindenwood made a quick burst to regain the lead.

Breno Larson-Gulsvig hit a 3-pointer to break Lindenwood's scoring drought, then Jackson made a layup and a free throw to put Lindenwood up 66-65 with just under a minute to play.
Corbin Byford missed a chance to put the Bronchos back ahead with 20 seconds left. Lindenwood then added a free throw to make it 67-65.

Johnson missed another shot in the final seconds, Hammond got a rebound, and then out of a timeout, Corey Alpough was sent to the line with just one second left on the clock. Alpough missed both free throws though, ending the chance for any late-game heroics from the Bronchos.

Hammond led UCO Saturday with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Byford had 13 points and two rebounds. Johnson finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

Holliday, who led UCO with 28 on Thursday and leads the Bronchos in scoring this season, finished with seven points on a 3 for 10 shooting night.

The Bronchos as a team 23 of 46 from the floor. It's just the second time this season the Bronchos have lost a game when they shoot 50 percent.

UCO is back home next week and will take on Emporia State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12 in Hamilton Field House.
