Bronchos sweep Missouri Western in conference clash

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma women's volleyball team beat Missouri Western 3-0 on Friday at Hamilton Field House in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics competition.

The Bronchos (15-1, 2-1) edged Missouri Western 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19. Fulani Petties led the Bronchos with 12 kills, Taylor Bevis added 11 and Katy Davis' steady play and 38 assists gave Central Oklahoma all it needed to win.

The first set was all Bronchos. UCO jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Petties racked up six kills in the opening frame to set the tone for the night.

Missouri Western put up more of a fight in the second set, pushing the Bronchos some. There were eight ties and four lead changes in the second set, but when the Bronchos gained the upper hand late in the set, it was over. Bevis led the charge this time with five kills.

Petties came back on strong to finish off Missouri Western. Though the Bronchos had to battle for every point again, Petties play in the attack was crucial. She gathered five kills in the final frame to propel the Bronchos to victory.

Jordan Spence also came on big late in the match for UCO. Spence had four kills in the third set.

Defensively, UCO was strong at the net, getting two solo blocks from Allison Barr and Ijeoma Njenje as well as six block assists.
