Homers Carry UCO To Doubleheader Sweep

BOLIVAR, Mo. (April 8) – Shelby Carel and Lexi Watson smacked two home runs apiece and Central Oklahoma used a pair of seventh-inning scoring bursts to secure a doubleheader sweep of Southwest Baptist here Friday afternoon.

The hard-hitting Bronchos scored three runs in the seventh inning of the opener to clinch an 8-4 victory and then pulled away for a 14-5 rout in the nightcap with a seven-run volley in their final at bat after trailing 5-0 early in the game.

UCO improved to 29-13 on the season and 12-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with the sweep.  The Bronchos move on to Warrensburg, Mo. Saturday to face Central Missouri in another league twinbill.

"Both games were tough, but we did some good things offensively at the end to come out on top," head coach Cody White said.  "It's hard winning games on the road in this league and I'm happy with the way we performed today."

UCO, which ranks among the national leaders in several offensive categories, banged out 29 hits – 10 for extra bases -- on the day.

Watson had a homer in each game and Carel went yard twice in the nightcap, with the Bronchos belting four of their five second-game dingers in a seventh-run fifth inning to overcome a 5-0 deficit.

Morgan Heard led UCO's 15-hit attack in the opener with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, while Ally Dziadula and Ashton Smith had three hits each.

Dziadula's two-run single helped stake the Bronchos to a 3-0 lead early in that contest and Watson's lead-off homer in the fifth had UCO up 5-1, but the Bearcats got back in the game with a three-run sixth.

Heard had a two-run double and Dziadula an RBI single in the seventh to give the Bronchos a comfortable 8-4 cushion and SBU didn't threaten in its final at bat.

Nicole Brady picked up the pitching win, giving up two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, while Jessi Walker earned the save after allowing one hit in the final 1 2/3 innings.

The Bearcats hit a pair of homers of their own in taking a 5-0 lead after four innings of the nightcap, but that disappeared quickly in the top of the fifth behind UCO's long-ball assault.

Halley Randolph got the Bronchos going with a two-run blast, Carel and Heard added solo shots and Watson capped the carnage with a three-run bomb to put the Bronchos on top 7-5.

It stayed that way until the seventh, when UCO broke the game open with seven more runs.

Ashleigh Tramel, JoBi Heath and Tori Collet had RBI singles to extend the lead before Carel – who entered the day with three career homers -- put the game away with a grand slam to left-center field to make it 14-5.

Heard, Watson, Randolph, Smith and Carel had two hits apiece to lead a 14-hit attack, while Abbie Lancaster got the pitching win with 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
