UCO Falls To Late Rally

EDMOND (April 8) – A late-game lead turned into a disappointing loss for Central Oklahoma Friday as Missouri Western handed the Bronchos a 10-9 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO scored eight two-out runs en route to grabbing a comfortable 9-3 after seven innings before the Griffons erupted for seven runs in the eighth to rally for their 10th straight road win.

The Bronchos fell to 20-13 on the season and 12-10 in the league, while MWSU improved to 22-11 and 14-8.  The two teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday before finishing the three-game series at noon Sunday.

"That was a very disappointing loss," head coach John Martin said.  "We had the game in our hands and just didn't finish."

MWSU got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but the Bronchos came right back with three in the bottom half of the inning.

Landon Eason reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in the second out of the inning before Jon Kamies singled through the left side and Jacob Borrego walked to load the bases for Isaac Hellbusch, who promptly drilled a double off the right-center field wall to push across all three runs.

UCO made it 6-3 in the fourth with a three more two-out runs.

Trae Smith drew a one-out walk, Jake Dyer was hit by pitch with two outs and Eason followed with another walk before Kamies came through with a two-run bloop single to right-center.  Eason scored on a wild pitch moments later to give the Bronchos a three-run lead.

The Griffons scored a single run in the fifth, with UCO getting that back in the sixth when Smith led off with a moon ball shot over the right field wall to make it 7-3.

The Bronchos scored their final two-out runs in the seventh, taking advantage of three more free passes.  Hellbusch scored the first run on a wild pitch after walking earlier in the inning and Chris Lobato upped the lead to 9-3 with an RBI single to left field.

That six-run cushion disappeared in a hurry in the eighth when MWSU erupted for seven runs to grab a 10-9 lead, the big blows a three-run homer and two-run double.

Kamies, Hellbusch, Smith and Lobato had two hits apiece for UCO.
