Bronchos Split With No. 10 St. Mary's

EDMOND (April 6) – Central Oklahoma bounced back from a first-game power shortage with a trio of home runs to earn a non-conference doubleheader split with No. 10-rated St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at Broncho Field.

The Bronchos – who entered the day ranked fifth nationally in homers – managed only six singles in a 5-2 first-game loss before JoBi Heath, Tori Collet and Morgan Heard all belted three-run dingers to spark a 12-8 second-game victory.

"We wasted some good chances and didn't do much offensively in the first game, but I was proud of the way we put that behind us," said head coach Cody White, whose team is now 27-13 on the season.  "We overcame some mistakes in the field and came out with a good win against a tough team in that second game."

UCO made six errors in the nightcap, but the three-homer barrage was enough to make up for it.

SMU broke on top 2-0 in the top of the first, but Heath put the Bronchos in front with a massive drive way over the right field fence for her ninth homer in the bottom of that frame to make it 3-2.

The Rattlers tied it in the top of the second and then UCO took control with a six-run volley in the third as Collet and Heard both went yard for their sixth homers of the season.

Collet smacked a line-drive three-run shot to center field to break the deadlock and Heard followed later in the inning with a long fly to right to make it 9-3.

SMU got three runs back in the top of the fifth, but the Bronchos answered that with three of their own in the bottom of the inning behind Heard's  two-run double to go up 12-6.

The Rattlers scored once each in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn't enough.

Heard led UCO's 11-hit attack with a 3-for-5, five-RBI performance.  Lexi Watson and Ashton Smith added two hits each.

Jessi Walker earned the pitching win, going the first 4 2/3 innings and improving to 13-6.  Freshman Abbie Lancaster came on to get the Bronchos out of a jam in the sixth and allowed two unearned runs in the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up her first career save.

UCO failed to take advantage of a pair of early scoring opportunities in the opener, making three straight outs after loading the bases in the first inning and doing the same again in the third after putting its first two runners on back.

The Rattlers broke a scoreless deadlock in the third with four two-out runs and went up 5-0 in the fifth with an unearned run.

The Bronchos didn't break through until its final at bat when Carli Jones delivered a two-out, two-run single to left-center field.

Jones had two of UCO's six hits.

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend, playing a doubleheader at Southwest Baptist Friday before moving on to Central Missouri for a Saturday twinbill.
