Bronchos Rally Past No. 19 Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. (June 5) – Jon Kamies and Jacob Borrego smacked back-to-back home runs to open the ninth inning and ignite a five-run rally that lifted Central Oklahoma to a 10-9 upset of No. 19-ranked Missouri Southern here Tuesday night.

The Bronchos trailed 7-1 after four innings, but scored twice in the fifth and once in the eighth to stay within striking distance before completing the comeback with the ninth-inning outburst.

UCO outhit the Lions 18-9 and used eight pitchers to subdue the Lions after dropping hard-fought 13-10 and 10-9 decisions in the first two Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association meetings between the two teams.

"I was really proud of the way our guys stayed in the game after we got down early and just kept competing," head coach John Martin said.  "Our offense was really good the entire game and the pitching staff did a good job keeping them in check after we got behind.  It's a big win for us, especially on the road against a team the caliber of Missouri Southern."

The Bronchos ended a four-game losing streak in improving to 20-12 on the season and 12-9 in the league.  MSSU fell to 22-9 and 12-9.

UCO was down 8-4 entering the top of the night, but Kamies got the Bronchos going with a lead-off homer to left-center and Borrego followed with a shot over the left field fence to quickly make it 8-6.

Isaac Hellbusch doubled and scored on Brenton Washausen's one-out single and UCO tied it on T.J. Sparr's single before going ahead 9-8 on a run-scoring base hit by Jake Dyer.

Ryan McCourt came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth and closed out the game to earn his first save.  Zayne Dougan earned the win after pitching a one-hit eighth inning.

Washausen and Landon Eason had three hits apiece to lead the offense, with Hellbusch, Kamies, Borrego, Sparr and Trae Smith adding two hits each.

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in the third on Dyer's lead-off homer to left-center, but MSSU scored seven runs in the fourth – all of them unearned after a two-out error extended the inning – to go up 7-1.

Hellbusch had an RBI single in a two-run fifth to made it 7-3 and the Lions scored their final run in the bottom of that frame, but UCO got that back in the eighth when Smith doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Bronchos return home Friday to host Missouri Western at 3 p.m. to open a three-game conference series.
