UCO Wins Two In Conference Tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (April 28) – Central Oklahoma used a big rally and an early lead to pick up two wins on the first day of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament Thursday at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex.

The Bronchos overcame a 7-1 deficit in rallying for a thrilling 9-8 extra-inning victory over Central Missouri in the opener before taking an early 4-0 lead en route to beating Northwest Missouri 5-1.

UCO, now 38-16, advanced to Friday's 1:30 p.m. winner's bracket finals against regular season champion Missouri Western (41-11).

"I'm really proud of the way this team battled today," head coach Cody White said.  "We got down early in the first game, but stayed positive and fought our way back.  Then we turned right around and played a team that was pretty rested, but we got off to a good start and came through with a great win."

Ally Dziadula's bases-loaded fielder's choice pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the first-round win against UCM as the Bronchos overcame a 7-1 deficit.

UCO got two-run home runs from JoBi Heath and Shelby Carel in a six-run fifth-inning outburst to take an 8-7 lead, with the Jennies scoring a single run in the top of the sixth to tie it.

It stayed deadlocked until the ninth.

Halley Randolph led with a double to left-center field and pinch-runner Carli Woolsey advanced to third on Tori Collet's sacrifice bunt.  UCM then walked Heath and Carli Jones to load the bases and create a force-out situation at any base, but Woolsey easily beat the throw home on Dziadula's grounder between first and second for the game-winner.

The Bronchos left 15 runners on base, finishing the game with 11 hits while also drawing 13 walks.  Heath led the way with a  3-for-4 performance, while Carel, Collet and Randolph had two hits apiece.

Jessi Walker came up big in the pitching circle, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out five in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Heath's run-scoring single in the first inning was the only score UCO managed in falling behind 7-1 after the top of the fourth before getting one back in the bottom of that frame on Ashton Smith's RBI groundout.

The Bronchos finally broke through the next inning, sending 11 players to the plate in taking the lead.

Collet led off with a single and added an RBI single in her second at bat of the inning, while Heath belted a two-run homer to left-center, Carel smoked a two-run shot to right along and Randolph added a run-scoring single as UCO went ahead 8-7.

The Bronchos took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against NWMSU when Collet led off with a single up the middle, Heath reached on an error and both scored on Jones' base hit to left field.

Morgan Heard opened the third with a triple to right-center and scored on a Smith groundout, then Randoph singled and ended up making it 4-0 later on Heath's single up the middle.

NWMSU scored once in the fourth and the Bronchos got that back in the sixth when Heath ripped a one-out triple to right-center field and Dziadula followed an out later with a triple down the right-field line to complete the scoring.

The Bronchos benefitted from three huge defensive plays in the outfield.  Carel threw a runner out at third base from right field in the third inning and Rachel Harper make a sensational running catch at the fence in center field to end the fourth before running down another long drive for the first out in the fifth.

Abbie Lancaster earned the pitching win, giving up five hits and one run in 4 1/3 innings.  Nicole Brady picked up her fifth save with 2 2/3 shutout innings, allowing two hits.

Jones had two of UCO's seven hits.
