Bronchos Fall In MIAA Tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (April 29) – High-scoring Central Oklahoma suffered a rare shutout Friday afternoon at the ASA Hall of Fame Softball Complex as Missouri Western handed the Bronchos a 2-0 setback in the winner's bracket finals of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament.

UCO outhit the No. 13-ranked Griffons 7-4, but the Bronchos – who rank fifth nationally in runs per game with 7.5 -- left 11 runners on base and failed to take advantage of several prime scoring chances in getting blanked for just the second time in 55 games.

UCO fell to 38-17 on the season and will play Pittsburg State (39-18) in an elimination contest at 10 a.m. Saturday.  The winner of that game takes on MWSU (42-11) at 12:30 p.m. in the finals, with the "if necessary" game to follow.

Fans will be able to watch both the championship and "if necessary" game for just $9.99 by going to http://portal.stretchinternet.com/miaa. This marks the first time that the MIAA has offered the MIAA Softball Championship via livestream.

"We had some chances and just weren't able to take advantage," head coach Cody White said.  "I thought Jessi (Walker) really threw well and gave us a chance, but we just couldn't come up with the key hits we needed."

Walker limited the Griffons to four hits while walking five and striking out four in a 105-pitch outing.  She gave up single runs in the first and sixth innings.

The Bronchos stranded two runners four different times, including in the final three innings.

JoBi Heath drew a walk and Carli Jones singled with one out in the second before a strikeout and groundout ended that threat.

UCO had a golden scoring opportunity in the fifth after Rachel Harper led off with a double down the left field line and Morgan Heard drew a walk.  Both runners advanced on Ashton Smith's sacrifice bunt, but MWSU got out of danger with a pop-out and groundout.

Ally Dziadula and Shelby Carel had back-to-back two-out infield singles in the sixth before a fly-out ended the inning, with UCO getting another chance in its final at bat.

Heard started the seventh with a double down the right field line, Smith followed with a walk and both advanced on Halley Randolph's sacrifice before a groundout and strikeout ended the game.

Harper had two of UCO's seven hits.
