Bronchos Fall In Series Finale

EDMOND (April 24) – A six-run outburst that featured a pair of long home runs had Central Oklahoma feeling good early, but the Bronchos didn't manage much offense the rest of the way in falling to Northwest Missouri 10-7 Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO exploded for six runs in its first at bat to take the early lead as Isaac Hellbusch and Brenton Washausen both sent balls sailing out of the park, though the Bronchos wouldn't score again until the seventh.

The Bearcats scored three runs in the second and four in the third to take the lead before going up 10-6 with two sixth-inning scores and UCO managed just one seventh-inning run.

The Bronchos fell to 24-18 on the season and 16-15 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with their second straight loss in the series after taking Friday's opener.

UCO is back in action Wednesday, hosting league and intrastate rival Northeastern State at 3 p.m. in the home finale.

"We had the bats going early, but it was a struggle after that," head coach John Martin said.  "It was a disappointing way to end the series and we just have to bounce back Wednesday."

NWMSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Bronchos answered back with authority.

Jacob Borrego drew a one-out walk to start things in the bottom of the first and then scored on Landon Eason's double to left-center before Jon Kamies reached on a wild pitch after striking out.

Hellbusch followed by planting his eighth homer of the season deep over the left field fence to plate three runs and Korey Floyd singled before Washausen made it 6-1 with a long smash to left for his 11th homer of the season.

But the Bronchos managed only three hits in the next five innings as NWMSU rallied to take a 10-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

UCO scored its final run in that frame when Eason singled, went to second on a wild pitch and went home on Hellbusch's single through the left side.

Hellbusch finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead a nine-hit attack, while Eason and Washausen added two hits each.
