Bronchos Fall In Extra Innings

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (April 20) – Northeastern State scored two runs in the bottom of the 14th inning to hand Central Oklahoma a tough 10-9 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association loss here Wednesday.

The Bronchos broke an 8-8 deadlock with a run in the top of the 14th, but NSU scored twice in the bottom of that frame – the final run coming on a sacrifice bunt – to take the back-and-forth four-hour struggle.

UCO led 8-3 after the top of the sixth inning only to see the RiverHawks rally to tie it at 8-all and force extra innings.  Both teams threatened in the 11th before the Bronchos finally broke the deadlock in the 14th when T.J. Sparr was hit by pitch, went to second on Chris Lobato's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jake Dyer's double down the left field line.

NSU got a one-out walk in the bottom of that frame and then tied the game with a triple before getting the win on a sacrifice bunt.

UCO fell to 23-16 on the season and 15-13 in the league.

The Bronchos finished with 16 hits as both Dyer and Jon Kamies went 4-for-7 at the plate while Landon Eason added three hits.

UCO jumped out to a quick lead as Dyer opened the game with a single and Eason added a one-out hit before Kamies plated Dyer with a single through the left side.  Eason scored on Trae Smith's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

NSU got one run back in its first at bat, but the Bronchos came back with four in the top of the second to go up 6-1.

Two walks and a Sparr single loaded the bases before Dyer reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in an out at home.  Jacob Borrego drew the third walk of the inning to force in the first run, Eason followed with a two-run single to left field and Kamies capped the scoring with an RBI single to center.

The RiverHawks scored twice in the bottom of the second to get within 6-3 and UCO got one of those back in the fifth when Smith walked on then scored on an error following Sparr's two-out single.

Eason had a two-out single and Kamies followed with a run-scoring double in the sixth to push the lead to 8-3, but NSU rallied with one run in the sixth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie it.

The Bronchos return home Friday to host league rival Northwest Missouri at 3 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field to start a three-day, three-game series.
