Brady, Lancaster Lead UCO Sweep

EMPORIA, Kan. (April 14) – A pair of complete-game pitching performances led Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Emporia State here Thursday.

Nicole Brady went the distance in a 4-2 first-game win, while Abbie Lancaster pitched seven solid innings in a 3-1 second-game victory as the Bronchos improved to 33-15 on the season and 16-6 in the league.

"Nicole and Abbie both did a great job today and we came out with two good road wins," head coach Cody White said.  "We didn't have our normal game offensively, but we came up with some key hits when we needed them."

Brady scattered eight hits while walking one and striking out three in the opener, improving to 13-4 with her eighth complete game of the season.

UCO trailed 1-0 until the fifth when Morgan Heard tied the game with a run-scoring double – her school record-tying 21st of the season – and the Bronchos broke the deadlock in the sixth.

Halley Randolph led off that inning with a triple  to right field and pinch-runner Carrie Abrams scored the go-ahead run on Lexi Watson's infield single.  JoBi Heath followed with a double and Tori Collet gave UCO a 4-1 lead with a two-run double to left field.

The Hornets scored once in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 4-2, but Brady got out of that inning and then retired the side in the seventh to finish off the win.

Randolph, Collet and Morgan Heard had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit attack.

Lancaster continued her late-season surge in the nightcap, giving up six hits with no walks and one strikeout in a 90-pitch outing for the first complete-game of her career in moving to 4-0.

UCO broke a scoreless deadlock in the fifth with all three runs.

Ashleigh Tramel led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Ally Dziadula's sacrifice bunt before pinch-runner Lauren Kelley went to third on Rachel Harper's bunt single.

Heard's single to center field plated Kelley to put the Bronchos on top to stay and another run scored on an error following Randolph's single to left before Watson made it 3-0 with an RBI base hit.

Lancaster lost the shutout in the bottom of the seventh, but retired the final three ESU batters to close out the game.

UCO opens a regular season-ending six-game homestand Tuesday against Rogers State.
