Heard Sets Records In UCO Sweep

EDMOND (April 22) – Morgan Heard broke a pair of school records to spark Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Southern here Friday.

Heard went 3-for-3 with a home run and five runs batted in during a 15-1 first-game drubbing and added two hits in a 10-2 second-game rout, setting UCO single-season records of doubles (22) and hits (84) in the process.

The Bronchos improved to 35-15 on the season and 18-6 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play in stretching its winning streak to five straight.  UCO ends the home and regular season schedule Saturday with a 1 p.m. league twinbill with Pittsburg State on Senior Day.

"We have a lot of offensive weapons and showed that today," head coach Cody White said.  "We struggled some at the plate last week, but had a good week of practice and it paid off."

UCO had nine hits and took advantage of seven walks in the opener, with Heard and Lexi Watson both belting homers to give the Bronchos a school-record 70 on the season.

Heard's eighth homer of the year was a three-run shot in the second inning to help give UCO an early 4-0 lead and the Bronchos made it 8-0 in the third as Heard and Ally Dziadula had RBI singles.

The Lions scored their lone run in the top of the fourth, but UCO answered with seven in the bottom of that frame to go up 15-1 en route to ending the game after five on the eight-run rule.

Watson had the big blow in the fifth with a three-run blast to center field – her team-high 14th of the season – and Halley Randolph ripped a two-run double.

Nicole Brady picked up the pitching win, scattering five hits and giving up one run in four innings before Jessi Walker pitched a perfect fifth.

MSSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the second game, but the Bronchos responded with six runs in their next at bat to regain control.

Ten batters went to the plate in that big inning, with Ashton Smith and Carli Jones delivering two-run hits to key the charge.

Heard led off the fourth with her record-breaking double and ending up scoring on Randolph's fielder's choice, with JoBi Heath adding an RBI single to push the lead to 8-2.

UCO then ended the game early in the bottom of the fifth when Heard singled, Smith walked and Randolph drove a double down the left field line to score both and make it 10-2.

Smith, Watson, Heath and Tori Collet joined Heard with two-hit games in the contest.

Abbie Lancaster allowed one earned run in the first three innings to earn the win, with Walker giving up just one hit in the final two frames.
