Bronchos Split At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 13) -- Abbie Lancaster and Nicole Brady combined to throw a five-hitter as Central Oklahoma picked up an 8-2 second-game win over Washburn to earn a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader split here Wednesday.

The Bronchos dropped the first game 3-1 before bouncing back in the nightcap, improving to 31-15 on the season and 14-6 in league play.  UCO moves on to Emporia, Kan. Thursday for a twinbill against Emporia State.

Lancaster earned the pitching win in the nightcap, giving up just two hits and one earned run in going the first 4 2/3 innings.  Brady picked up her fourth save after allowing three hits and one run in the final 2 1/3 innings.

UCO took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the second game on two-out run-scoring hits by JoBi Heath and Tori Collet, with Heath driving a single to right-center field and Collet a double to center field.

The Bronchos had golden chances to take control in both the third and fourth innings, but scored only once despite loading the bases both times.

Ally Dziadula, Harper and Morgan Head led off the third with consecutive singles and an error scored one run to leave the bases full, but a double play and groundout cut the inning short.  Heard and Halley Randolph walked and Lexi Watson singled to load the bases with one out in the fourth before UCO was stymied once again by two straight groundouts.

WU made it a 3-1 game in the fifth, with the Bronchos coming back in the sixth to go ahead 5-1 as Heard singled and Randolph later added a two-run home run to left-center.

The Ichabods scored their final run in the sixth and then UCO put the game away with a three-run volley in the top of the seventh as Smith had a two-run single to left-center and Heard an RBI hit up the middle.

Heard went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead UCO's 14-hit attack, while Heath, Smith, Dziadula and Rachel Harper added two hits apiece.

The Bronchos -- who entered the day ranked second in the country with a .365 team average -- managed only six hits  in the opener, with Harper collecting three of those.

UCO had a prime scoring opportunity get away early after a hit batter and consecutive singles by Smith and Harper loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

WU scored single runs in the second and fifth innings, with the Bronchos getting their lone score in the sixth on Randolph's RBI single make it 2-1 before the Ichabods added an insurance run in the bottom of that frame.

Brady took the tough-luck pitching loss, giving up just six hits and two earned runs while striking out three in falling to 12-4.
