Bronchos Fall In Series Finale

EDMOND (April 10) – Missouri Western used another big inning to take control early and Central Oklahoma never recovered in dropping a 22-2 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Griffons pulled out a 10-9 win in Friday's series opener behind a seven-inning eighth-inning uprising and scored eight ninth-inning runs en route to a 22-21 victory Saturday before breaking a 2-2 tie Sunday with a seven-run third-inning outburst.

The Bronchos fell to 20-15 on the season and 1212 in the league, while MWSU improved to 24-11 and 16-8 with its 12th straight road win.

"That was a tough way to end the series," head coach John Martin said.  "We had a chance to win the first two games and today we just didn't do anything right."

UCO got off to a good start as lead-off hitter Jake Dyer tripled to left-center field on the first pitch he saw and Landon Eason followed with a triple to center field to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

The Griffons scored twice in the top of the second, but UCO came back to tie it in the bottom of that frame when Trae Smith doubled, went to third on Korey Floyd's single and scored on T.J. Sparr's double through the left side.

But it was all MWSU after that.

The Griffons scored seven times in the third to go up 9-2, made it 11-2 in the fifth and then scored 11 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to end the game early on the 10-run rule.

MWSU ended with 22 hits, including six home runs.

The Bronchos, who homered eight times in Saturday's wild loss, didn't have a long ball in the series finale and finished with nine hits.  Dyer and Sparr had two each to lead the way.

UCO is back in action Wednesday, hosting intrastate rival Northeastern State for a 3 p.m. single game.
