Bronchos Earn Split With NSU

EDMOND (April 1) – Carli Jones went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead a 14-hit attack that carried Central Oklahoma to an 11-1 second-game drubbing of Northeastern State as the Bronchos split a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader here Friday.

The RiverHawks halted UCO's 11-game home winning streak with a 4-3 victory in the opener before the Bronchos rebounded with the easy run-rule rout in the nightcap.

The two teams meet again Saturday for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader in Tahlequah.

"I liked the way we bounced back after a tough loss in the first game," said head coach Cody White, whose team is now 25-11 on the season and 10-4 in the league.  "We came up with some key hits and it was a big win for us."

Jones' perfect performance highlighted an onslaught that saw all nine UCO batters get at least one hit, with Morgan Heard, Halley Randolph and Ashton Smith both getting two.

Jessi Walker backed up the offense with a strong pitching outing, giving up just three hits while striking out two in going all five innings to pick up the win.

Jones gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a run-scoring triple and UCO scored three times in the second to break 1-1 tie in taking the lead for good.

Shelby Carel's two-run triple was the big blow in the that frame while Ally Dziadula added an RBI double, with JoBi Heath's sacrifice fly and Halley Randolph's run-scoring fielder's choice making it 6-1 in the third.

The Bronchos broke the game open with a  five-run volley in the fourth, getting run-scoring hits from Jones, Heath, Randolph, Smith and Tori Collet.

UCO led 3-0 after five innings in the first game, but the RiverHawks used a pair of two-run home runs in the sixth to move in front.  The Bronchos got a lead-off double from Heard in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't push across the tying run and went down in order in the seventh.

Heard and Jones had two hits apiece to lead the offense.

The Bronchos went up 2-0 in their first at bat when Dziadula singled, Jones doubled and Heath came through with a two-out single up the middle to push across both runners.  UCO made it 3-0 in the fifth on Jones' RBI single to left field that scored Heard, who had led off the inning with a triple down the right field line.

NSU managed just three hits in the first five innings before breaking through in the decisive sixth with its two homers.
