No. 10 Hornets Top UCO

EMPORIA, Kan. (April 1) – No. 10-ranked Emporia State used a trio of home runs to hand Central Oklahoma an 8-1 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Friday night.

It was the opener of a three-game series between the two teams, with the Hornets smashing a three-run homer and a pair of two-run shots en route to raising their record to 22-7 overall and 14-4 in the league.

UCO fell to 19-10 on the season and 11-7 in the conference with its second straight loss.  The teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday before finishing the series at noon Sunday.

ESU outhit the Bronchos just 9-7, but the three long bombs were the difference.

The Hornets clubbed two-run homers in the first and third innings to grab a 4-0 lead, added a single run in the fourth to go up 5-0 and smacked a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 8-0.

UCO's lone run came in the bottom of the eighth on Jake Dyer's lead-off solo homer.  T.J. Sparr had two of the Bronchos' seven hits.
