Griffons Sweep UCO

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (March 5) – Missouri Western used a pair of big innings to sweep a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from No. 12-ranked Central Oklahoma here Saturday.

The Griffons scored seven runs in the sixth inning to claim a 10-2 run-rule victory in the opener and then scored seven second-inning runs in the nightcap to take an 8-1 lead before holding off the Bronchos 8-7.

UCO fell to 13-7 on the season and 1-3 in the conference with the two losses.

The Bronchos managed only five hits in the first game, but trailed just 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth when MWSU exploded for seven runs to end the game early.

UCO ripped 14 hits in the second contest, but couldn't quite overcome the early deficit.  Morgan Heard went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the way, while Ally Dziadula, Carli Jones and Ashton Smith had two hits each.

The Griffons took advantage of five walks and three wild pitches to score seven runs in the second inning and led 8-1 after three innings.

The Bronchos got back in the game with a five-run volley in the fifth as Dziadula had a three-run double while Heard and Ashleigh Tramel delivered RBI singles.

UCO cut the margin to 8-7 in the top of the seventh on Tori Collet's two-out pinch-hit run-scoring single, but the Griffons held on.

The Bronchos return to MIAA play Friday at home against Lindenwood.
