UCO Splits League Doubleheader

MARYVILLE, Mo. (March 4) – JoBi Heath's lead-off home run in the fifth inning broke a tie and ignited a five-run outburst that sparked Central Oklahoma to a 9-5 second-game victory over Northwest Missouri here Friday as the Bronchos bounced back from a tough opening loss to gain a doubleheader split.

The Bearcats scored five runs – four of them unearned – in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand No. 12-ranked UCO a stunning 6-4 setback in the first game of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association twinbill before the Bronchos regrouped.

UCO, now 13-5 on the season and 1-1 in the league, move on to St. Joseph, Mo. Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Missouri Western.

"I was proud of the way we were able to put the first-game loss behind us and focus on gaining a split," head coach Cody White said.  "It was disappointing to lose the first game since we looked like we had it in hand, but things can turn quickly in his game and at least we didn't let that one loss affect us and turn into two."

The second game was deadlocked 4-all after four innings when Heath started the top of the fifth with her fifth homer of the season, this one a shot over the center field wall that put the Bronchos on top to stay.

Rachel Harper added a run-scoring double, Ally Dziadula and Lexi Watson had two-out RBI singles and Morgan Heard a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 9-4 and NWMSU managed just one run in its final three turns at bat.

UCO trailed 3-2 after the first inning of the game before taking a 4-3 lead in the fourth on Ashleigh Tramel's lead-off homer and Carli Jones' RBI double.  The Bearcats tied it in the bottom of that frame.

Tramel and Jones had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit attack.

Nicole Brady went the first six innings to pick up the pitching win, while Jessi Walker came on in the seventh after NWMSU led off with back-to-back singles to put down three straight batters and earn the save.

The Bronchos jumped on top in their first at bat in the opener after Heard was hit by pitch, Dziadula walked and Jones singled to load the bases for Watson, who promptly blasted her fifth bomb of the season to make it 4-0.

UCO didn't score again, but it had a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh and appeared in control.

The Bearcats opened the inning with a pinch-hit homer to make it 4-2 and an error later kept the inning alive before a two-out double tied it.  NWMSU then won the game with a walk-off two-run homer.

Jones and Heath had two hits apiece to pace the offense.
