No. 13 Lions Edge UCO

EDMOND (March 30) -- A spirited late-inning rally got Central Oklahoma back in the game, but No. 13-ranked Missouri Southern broke a ninth-inning tie and held on for a 10-9 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory Wednesday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos scored two runs in the sixth, seven and eighth innings to overcome an 8-3 deficit and pull even at 9-all before the Lions scored the tie-breaking run in the top of the ninth and then used a big double play in UCO's final at bat to secure the win.

MSSU, which beat the Bronchos 13-10 last week in Joplin, improved to 20-7 on the season and 10-7 in the league.  UCO fell to 19-9 and 11-6 in having a five-game home winning streak snapped.

"We were behind the whole game and just kept battling back," head coach John Martin said.  "We did a lot of good things offensively to stay in the ball game and just came up a little short."

The Bronchos had a 16-12 edge in hits and belted four home runs, but MSSU took advantage of 11 walks and scored four unearned runs.

UCO trailed 9-7 entering the eighth inning before Jake Dyer tied the game for the first time with a line-drive two-run homer to straightaway center field.

The Lions used a pair of hits and a wild pitch to go ahead 10-9 in the ninth and then held on.

Jon Kamies started the bottom of the ninth with a double off the left field wall, but he was doubled off second when MSSU's shortstop snared Isaac Hellbusch's hard-hit liner that appeared headed to the outfield and the Lions ended the game with a strikeout.

The Bronchos trailed just 4-3 after five innings before MSSU scored four unearned runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead.

Brenton Washausen and Trae Smith had solo homers in the sixth to make it 8-5 and UCO pulled within 8-7 in the seventh on Kamies' RBI double and Hellbusch's run-scoring groundout.

Missouri Southern scored once in the eighth to go up 9-7 before Dyer tied it with his two-run blast in the bottom of that inning.

Kamies went 4-for-5 with two doubles to lead UCO's offensive assault, while Eason and Washausen had three hits apiece.

The Bronchos return to league play Friday in Emporia, Kan. with the start of a three-game series at Emporia State.
