Borrego Sparks UCO Rout

PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 26) – Jacob Borrego drove in three runs in two at bats during a massive first-inning outburst that put Central Oklahoma in command en route to a 14-1 trouncing of Pittsburg State here Saturday afternoon.

Borrego had a two-run home run and RBI single in the top of the first inning as the Bronchos paraded 14 batters to the plate in an eight-hit, 10-run attack to put the game away early.

UCO added a four-run volley in the fifth to make it 14-0 and coasted in to complete a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of the Gorillas.

The Bronchos outscored PSU 34-7 in the series in winning for the eighth time in nine outings, improving to 19-8 on the season and 11-5 in the league.

"Sweeping a series on the road in this league is a big accomplishment and I'm proud of the way our guys played this weekend," head coach John Martin said.  "We came out aggressive and jumped on them early and good things happen when you do that."

Brock Stuber balanced UCO's offensive attack with a stellar outing on the mound, giving up just two hits in six shutout innings while striking out six in evening his record at 2-2.

The Bronchos finished with 12 hits, with most of that damage coming in the opening-inning onslaught.

Borrego followed Jake Dyer's game-opening single with his first homer of the season to quickly put UCO on top 2-0 and he added a run-scoring single in his next at bat.

The Bronchos got a two-run double from Chris Lobato, while Casey Bowlan, Landon Eason and Jon Kamies also had RBI hits and Dyer a sacrifice fly in the big inning.

UCO didn't score again until the fifth when it pushed four more runs across the plate, highlighted by Eason's two-run single.

Borrego, Eason, Dyer, Kames and Lobato had two hits apiece for the Bronchos.

UCO returns home Wednesday to host No. 19-ranked Missouri Southern for a 3 p.m. single game.
