Bronchos Top Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 25) – Jon Kamies slapped a two-run eighth-inning double to break a tie and spark Central Oklahoma to a 7-4 victory over Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Pittsburg State here Friday.

The Bronchos scored three runs in the eight to snap a 2-2 deadlock and added two more in the ninth to go up 7-2 before PSU scored twice in its final at bat to arrange the final margin.

It was the seventh win in eight games for UCO, which improved to 18-8 on the season and 10-5 in the conference.  The two teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday when the Bronchos will try to complete a sweep of the three-game series.

"We had some mistakes that hurt us, but we did a good job capitalizing on our scoring opportunities," head coach John Martin said.  "Any road win in this conference is good and it feels good to win the series, but hopefully we can come out tomorrow and get a sweep."

The game was tied 2-2 entering the top of the eighth, with back-to-back errors allowing Jake Dyer and Jacob Borrego to reach before Landon Eason walked to load the bases.  Kamies came through with a two-out double to left field to put UCO on top and Eason scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2.

That become a 7-2 advantage in the ninth when Casey Bowlan led off with a single and T.J. Sparr crushed a two-run home run to left-center field.

The Gorillas scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Bowlan and Sparr had two hits apiece to pace the offense, while Greg Hyde earned the pitching win.  The junior right-hander had five strikeouts in going the first seven innings, scattering six hits and giving up two runs in improving to 3-0.
