Bronchos Fall to No. 19 Lions

JOPLIN, Mo. (March 22) Brenton Washausen cranked a pair of home runs to stake Central Oklahoma to an early lead, but the Bronchos couldn't hold on in dropping a 13-10 decision to No. 19-ranked Missouri Southern here Tuesday night.

Washausen belted a grand slam in the fourth inning and added a two-run shot in the fifth as UCO built a 9-3 lead before the Lions rallied.  MSSU got close with two runs in the fifth, took the lead with six more in the sixth and added two insurance runs in the eighth.

The Bronchos had a five-game winning streak snapped in dropping to 16-8 on the season and 8-5 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  The Lions improved to 18-5 and 8-5.

"Missouri Southern just had a little too much firepower for us tonight," head coach John Martin said.  "We got out to a good lead, but they did a good job coming back on us and we couldn't answer."

UCO trailed 3-0 after three innings before moving ahead on Washausen's fourth-inning blast.

Landon Eason and Isaac Hellbusch led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Jon Kamies reached on an error before Washausen cleaned the bases with a drive over the left field fence.

The Bronchos added five unearned runs in the fifth to go up 9-3, with Washausen's two-run bomb to right field the big blow.  Hellbusch added an RBI single and two other runs scored on an error.

MSSU came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-5 and then took an 11-9 lead with its six-run volley in the sixth before clinching the win in the eighth.

UCO didn't go down without a fight, getting one-out hits from Hellbusch and Kamies in the top of the ninth before pushing one run across on T.J. Sparr's groundout before the rally ended.

Hellbusch and Jake Dyer had three hits apiece to pace UCO's 11-hit attack, while Washausen had two hits and six RBI.  The Lions finished with 18 hits.

The Bronchos go back on the road Thursday, traveling to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on Pittsburg State in the opener of a three-game conference series.
