Clean Sweep

EDMOND (March 20) – Clutch eighth-inning hits by Landon Eason and Jon Kamies vaulted Central Oklahoma to a 5-3 victory over Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Lindenwood Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

Eason and Kamies had consecutive two-out run-scoring doubles in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie as the Bronchos finished off a three-game series sweep of the Lions while pushing their winning streak to five straight.

"We had a tough time getting anything going offensively, but we came through with some big hits at the end," said head coach John Martin, whose team improved to 16-7 on the season and 8-4 in league play.  "It's big anytime you can sweep a series in this conference and I'm proud of the way our guys competed this weekend."

UCO was limited to five hits in the contest, but made them count.

Jake Dyer singled through the right side on the initial pitch of the first inning and ended up scoring on Kamies' fielder's choice to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead, which held up until Lindenwood scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to go up 2-1.

UCO went back ahead in the bottom of the seventh when Casey Bowlan came through with a key two-run pinch-hit double, though Lindenwood came back to tie it at 3-all in the top of the eighth.

The Lions got two quick outs in the bottom of that frame before Jacob Borrego drew his third walk of the game to keep the inning alive.  He came around to score the go-ahead run on Eason's smash off the center field wall and Kamies followed with a line-drive shot down the left-field line to plate Eason and make it 5-3.

Shawn Troutman pitched the ninth for his fourth save, though not without some drama.  The hard-throwing junior right-hander got two quick outs, but a walk and single put two runners on before Troutman ended the game with a strikeout.

Brock Stuber had a strong starting outing on the mound for the Bronchos, giving up just four hits and two runs while striking out seven in going the first seven innings.  Ryan McCourt ended up with the win after getting the final out of the eighth inning.

UCO also got two outstanding defensive plays in the outfield, with T.J. Sparr making a diving catch in right field in the third inning and Eason an equally acrobatic grab in center in the fifth.

UCO returns to action Tuesday when it goes to Joplin, Mo. to face Missouri Southern at 5 p.m.
