No. 24 UCO Takes Two From Dustdevils

EDMOND (March 15) – Morgan Heard hammered a pair of long balls to propel Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M International here Tuesday.

Heard's walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the No. 24-ranked Bronchos an 8-7 first-game victory and the sophomore standout belted a two-run shot in the nightcap to spark an 11-run fourth-inning outburst that carried UCO to a 16-9 rout.

The Bronchos overcame 7-3 deficits in both games, with JoBi Heath's two-out, two-run homer capping a four-run seventh-inning comeback that forced extra innings in the opener.  UCO was down by the same score in the second game before taking control with its 11-run explosion.

"We're never out of a game with the offense we have and that showed today," said third-year head coach Cody White, who earned his 100th career win in the opener.  "JoBi came through with a big-time hit to keep us going in the first game and Morgan was clutch all day long."

UCO entered the day ranked second in NCAA Division II in team batting average and slugging percentage and helped its cause in both cases by rapping 28 hits – including 11 for extra bases – in the sweep.

The Bronchos led 3-0 through four innings of the opener, but TAMUI broke through with a three-run homer in the fifth to tie it and scored four times in the sixth to go ahead 7-3.

UCO's seventh inning rally started innocently enough with Heard's one-out triple down the right field line and a run-scoring single by Ally Dziadula, who beat out a grounder to shortstop.

Carli Jones reached on an error that moved Dziadula to third, with a fielder's choice RBI by Lexi Watson making it 7-5.  Heath followed with the clutch two-out bomb that tied it, launching a full-count pitch over the right field fence for her sixth homer of the season.

It stayed deadlocked until the ninth when Heard led off with the game-winner, depositing a 2-2 pitch into a cedar tree beyond the right-center field wall to cap the comeback.

Heard's 3-for-5 performance at the plate led a 13-hit attack, while Dziadula, Jones and Heath had two hits apiece.

Nicole Brady earned the pitching win with 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out two and walking one in that stint.

UCO was down 7-3 again in the second game before taking charge with its big 11-run fourth, sending 16 batters to the plate behind a seven-hit, four-walk, two-error outing

Heard got the scoring going with a two-run homer to right-center, while Halley Randolph and Lexi Watson added two-RBI hits as the Bronchos went ahead 14-7.

TAMUI scored once each in the fifth and sixth to get within 14-9, but Heath drove a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to make it 16-9 and remove any doubt about the outcome.

Heard and Dziadula had three hits each to lead a 15-hit assault, with Heath and Shelby Carel adding two apiece.

Brady picked up her second pitching win of the day with 5 1/3 innings of relief work.

UCO returns to action this weekend with six games in three days at the Apple Market Softball Classic in St. Joseph, Mo.
