Bronchos Fall to Central Missouri

EDMOND (March 13) – Central Oklahoma couldn't recover from a 4-0 deficit and dropped a 6-2 decision to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Central Missouri Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

It was the rubber match of the three-game series between the two teams, with the Bronchos dropping to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in the conference while the Mules improved to 8-7 and 7-2.

"We had some good scoring opportunities and just didn't come up with the key hit when we needed it," first-year head coach John Martin said.  "We battled and gave ourselves a chance at the end, but just came up short."

UCO stranded 11 runners in the game while holding a 9-7 advantage in hits, but was hurt by 14 strikeouts.

Jake Dyer led the offense with a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance.  Five pitchers saw action, with starter Brock Stuber giving up just four hits and two earned runs in six innings of work in taking the tough loss.

UCM scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead before scoring two unearned runs in the sixth to go up 4-0.

It stayed that way until the eighth when the Bronchos scored their only two runs of the game to get close.

Jon Kamies started things with a one-out single,  Isaac Hellbusch was hit by pitch and Korey Floyd drew a walk to load the bases before Dyer's single through the right side plated two runs.

That left runners on first and second with one out, but the Mules used consecutive strikeouts to get out of the inning without more damage.

Central Missouri added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

UCO is back on the field Tuesday to host intrastate rival Southeastern Oklahoma for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
