No. 13 UCO Splits With Aggies

EDMOND (March 1) – It took 29 hits and 18 runs for Central Oklahoma to earn a doubleheader split with Cameron Tuesday at Broncho Field as the two offensive juggernauts had a tough time getting each other out at the plate.

No. 13-ranked UCO entered the day with a .369 team average while the Aggies were hitting .350, so plenty of runs were expected and the teams delivered.

The Bronchos dropped an 8-7 extra-inning decision in the opener despite slugging four home runs among their 14 hits before bouncing back for an 11-9 win in the nightcap behind a 15-hit attack that featured three more long balls.

"We knew it was going to be a long day with the way both teams can hit the ball and it certainly turned out that way," said Cody White, whose team is now 12-4.  "It was tough for both sides to get outs."

UCO appeared poised for a second-game rout after jumping to a 6-0 lead after two innings, with Lexi Watson's RBI double in the first and three-run homer in the second leading the charge.

Cameron scored five times in the third to get right back in the game, but Ashleigh Tramel had a solo blast as the Bronchos answered with three runs in their half of the inning to go up 9-5.

The Aggies scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the pressure on, with UCO getting a sacrifice fly from Morgan Heard in the fifth and a solo shot from Ashton Smith in the sixth to stay ahead.

Ally Dziadula led the offense with three hits, while Watson, Smith, JoBi Heath, Lauren Kelley and Rachel Harper had two apiece.

UCO hit all four first-game homers in the first four innings in taking a 7-4 lead, but the Aggies rallied with one run in the fifth and two in the seventh to tie it.

Cameron hit a lead-off homer in the eighth to move in front 8-7 and then held off the Bronchos in the bottom of that frame after Heath hit a two-out double and Tori Collet walked to keep the inning alive.

The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before UCO answered with an impressive power surge in its opening at-bat, getting consecutive homers from Watson, Heath and Collet.

Watson drove in two runs with a shot to right-center, Heath followed with her fourth dinger of the season to left-center and Collet made it three in a row with a long fly to left.

CU tied it in the top of second and the Bronchos went back ahead 5-4 in their half of the inning on Heath's run-scoring single.  Dziadula added a lead-off homer and Smith an RBI single in the fourth to make it 7-4.

Heath went 4-for-5 and Harper 3-for-3 to lead UCO's 14-hit attack, while Dziadula added two hits.

The Bronchos go on the road to open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend, playing doubleheaders at Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western.
