Bronchos Rally For Sweep of SOSU

DURANT, Okla. (March 1) – Trae Smith's clutch pinch-hit two-run single highlighted a furious seventh inning rally that pulled Central Oklahoma even and the Bronchos went on to beat Southeastern Oklahoma 13-12 in eight innings to complete a doubleheader sweep here Tuesday afternoon.

UCO hung on for a 3-2 win in the opener and led 5-1 early in the nightcap before the Savage Storm roared back to take a 12-6 lead into the seventh.

The Bronchos used five hits, two hit batters and a walk to push across six runs in their final at bat to make it 12-all before completing the stunning comeback with an unearned run in the eighth.

"We talk all the time about playing hard until the last out and today was a perfect example of that," said first-year head coach John Martin, whose team improved to 8-3.  "We looked out of the game, but our guys believed in themselves and they just kept battling.  We came out with two good wins and I'm really proud of the fight we showed."

Jacob Borrego got UCO's big seventh inning rally started with a lead-off single and Landon Eason followed with a triple down the right field line.  Isaac Hellbusch drew a walk and then T.J. Sparr had a one-out single to make it 12-8.

Brenton Washausen and Hunter Schellhardt were hit by pitch on consecutive at bats to push across another run before Smith drove a base hit through the right side to score two and make it 12-11.

Korey Floyd capped the comeback with a single to right field to tie the game.

SOSU put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Ryan McCourt ended the threat with a strikeout.

The Bronchos then took the lead in the eighth when Jon Kamies reached on an error to start the inning, stole second and went to third on a fly out before scoring on a wild pitch.

Shawn Troutman came on to pitch the final inning for UCO and put the Savage Storm down in order to finish off the game and earn his second save of the day.

Eason had three of UCO's 11 hits, while Borrego had two.

The Bronchos managed just five hits in the opener, but still pulled out a tight one-run win.

Kamies had two of those hits, giving UCO a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single and making it 2-1 in the fourth with a lead-off homer to left field.

Sparr pushed the lead to 3-1 with a two-out solo shot to left in the sixth and that was enough to hold off the Savage Storm.

Jaycee Parker picked up the pitching with 4 2/3 innings of starting work, while Troutman went the last inning to earn the save.

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend with a three-game series at Fort Hays State.
