Bronchos Complete Sweep of SBU

EDMOND (Feb. 28) – Jacob Borrego's run-scoring triple capped a three-run eighth inning that put Central Oklahoma in front and the Bronchos went on to beat Southwest Baptist 8-6 Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos never led until the eighth-inning rally en route to finishing off a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of the Bearcats and improving to 6-3 on the season and 3-0 in the league.

"Anytime you can sweep a series in this conference you have to be pleased and I'm happy with the way we competed today," first-year head coach John Martin said.  "We hung in there and kept battling and that's what I like to see."

UCO trailed 6-4 entering the eighth, but T.J. Sparr was hit by pitch leading off the inning and promptly scored on Brenton Washausen's double in the left-center field gap.

Hunter Schellhardt followed an SBU pitching change with a double down the left field line to tie the game and Borrego came through two outs later with a bloop triple to right field to plate the go-ahead run.

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the eighth when Jon Kamies belted his fourth home run of the series, this one a line drive to right-center field.

UCO finished with 10 hits, getting two apiece from Borrego, Sparr, Washausen and Schellhardt.

The Bearcats had four homers among their 12 hits, but all four were solo shots.

The Bronchos return to action Tuesday with a doubleheader at Southeastern Oklahoma.
