No. 12 St. Mary's Downs Bronchos

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 21) – One big inning ruined Central Oklahoma's final game at the Rattler Invitational here Sunday.

The Bronchos held a 5-1 lead before tournament host and No. 12-ranked St. Mary's blasted three home runs – including a grand slam – and erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to an 11-7 victory.

UCO went 3-2 in the three-day event with losses to the Rattlers and No. 10 Tarleton State while also earning a first-day win over St. Mary's.  The Bronchos, now 11-3 on the season, don't play again until hosting Cameron for a doubleheader March 1.

"We had a good game offensively, but just couldn't stop them in that one inning," said head coach Cody White, whose team finished with 13 hits.  "It was an up-and-down weekend for us and we obviously know we need to keep working hard at getting better."

Lexi Watson, Morgan Heard, Carli Jones, Tori Collet and JoBi Heath had two hits apiece to lead the potent offensive attack.

UCO jumped on top 1-0 in the first inning when Watson drew a lead-off walk, went to second on Ashton Smith's sacrifice bunt and scored on Jones' single up the middle.

St. Mary's tied it in the bottom half of the inning before the Bronchos went back on top with two runs in the second.  Heath led off with a bomb over the left field fence for her third home run of the season and Watson added a bloop RBI single to make it 3-1.

UCO pushed its lead to 5-1 in the fifth to seemingly take control as Heath had a run-scoring single and Ashleigh Tramel a sacrifice fly, but the game turned rapidly in the bottom of that frame when the Rattlers paraded 14 batters to the in scoring 10 runs to surge in front 11-5.

The Bronchos got two runs back in their final at bad on pinch-hit RBI doubles by Ally Dziadula and Lauren Kelley to arrange the final margin.

Heard, Jones and Ashton Smith were all named to the all-tournament team.
