UCO Splits In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 20) – Morgan Heard helped Central Oklahoma surge to an early lead and the Bronchos staved off Oklahoma Christian 4-3 to earn a split of two games in the Rattler Invitational here Saturday.

UCO dropped a 9-2 decision to No. 10-ranked Tarleton State in the first game after falling into a quick hole before bouncing back to beat the near-by Eagles for the third time this season.

The Bronchos, now 11-2 on the season, finish the three-day event Sunday with a 12:15 p.m. contest against tournament host and No. 12 St. Mary's.

"We did not have a good day and were fortunate to come out with a split," head coach Cody White said.  "Mentally we weren't ready to play either game and it showed with the mistakes we made in all phases of the game, but it was good to end the day on a positive."

Heard gave UCO the early lead against OC with a run-scoring double to right-center field in the top of the first inning, with a walk, error and two hit batters allowing the Bronchos to push across two more runs in taking a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles got one run back in the fourth without benefit of a hit before Ashton Smith pushed the lead to 4-1 when she belted the first pitch leading off the fifth over the left field fence for her third home run of the season.

OC scored once each in the fifth and sixth to pull within 4-3 and had a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh before reliever Nicole Brady got a game-ending groundout.

Mo Selman earned the pitching win in relief and Brady picked up the save, giving up one hit in 1 2/3 innings work.

Heard and Lexi Watson had two hits apiece, but the Bronchos finished with just six hits and left 13 runners on base.

Early mistakes hurt UCO in the loss to Tarleton as the Bronchos committed two of their five errors and had four wild pitches in the first two innings to fall behind 5-0 in having an eight-game winning streak snapped.

Tori Collet, Carli Jones and Smith had two hits apiece to lead a stagnant offense that stranded 12 runners on base one game after leaving 16 in an extra-inning 5-4 triumph over Texas A&M International Friday night.

The TexAnns led 7-0 before UCO got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Collet opened the inning with a double to right-center field and scored on Jones' one-out double down the right field line.

Tarleton was poised to end the game early on the eight-run rule after taking a 9-1 lead in the top of the sixth before the Bronchos stayed alive with an unearned run in the bottom of that frame, but there would be no miracle comeback.
