Smith Sparks Bronchos

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 19) – Ashton Smith smacked the ball out of the park to spark a first-game upset and then used an infield hit to lift Central Oklahoma to a dramatic extra-inning win as the Bronchos swept two games at the Rattler Invitational here Friday.

Smith's massive two-run home run helped stake UCO to an early lead in a 5-3 triumph over No. 12-ranked St. Mary's in the opener before the senior gave the Bronchos a 5-4 win over Texas A&M International with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

UCO improved to 10-1 and will take an eight-game winning streak into Saturday games against No. 10 Tarleton State and Oklahoma Christian.  The Bronchos play the host Rattlers again Sunday to finish the three-day event.

"I didn't do a very good job coaching and we didn't play very well in the second game, but we found a way to win," head coach Cody White said.  "We did a lot of good things against St. Mary's, but we came out flat in the second game and it almost cost us."

UCO stranded 16 runners against the Dustdevils – leaving the bases loaded twice – and the game went into extra innings tied 3-3.

TAMUI broke the deadlock with a run in the top of the eighth, but the Bronchos responded in their half of the inning to pull out the victory.

JoBi Heath was placed on second via the international tiebreaker rule to start the eighth and went to third on Morgan Heard's bunt single before scoring on Lexi Watson's single through the left side.

Halley Randolph was hit by pitch to load the bases and Smith came through with an infield single that plated Heard for the winning run.

UCO had 17 hits in the contest, getting three apiece from Smith, Heard and Watson.  Jessi Walker threw 147 pitches in earning the pitching win, giving up just five hits while striking out five in moving to 5-0.

The Bronchos took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against St. Mary's when Smith followed Tori Collet's lead-off double with a bomb to straightaway center field to make it 2-0.

Ashleigh Tramel tripled to right field before scoring on Shelby Carel's single up the middle and Carel later came home on an Ally Dziadula ground-out to up the lead to 4-0.

Smith made it 5-0 in the fifth when she ripped a two-out double off the centerfield fence to score Collet, who had walked and went to second on a wild pitch.

Nicole Brady cruised into the seventh in the pitching circle before the Rattlers used an error and three hits to score three runs to get within 5-3.  St. Mary's had a runner on third with one out, but Brady got a ground-out and fly ball to end the game.

The senior right-hander gave up seven hits and walked just one while striking out three in improving to 3-0.

UCO made two errors in the contest, but also benefitted from some outstanding defensive plays.  Watson had three stellar stops at third base on shots down the line and second baseman Dziadula made a brilliant over-the-shoulder catch in short right field on a pop fly to end a scoring threat.

Smith and Heard had two hits apiece to lead an eight-hit attack.
