UCO Falls In Overtime

EDMOND (Feb. 13) – Missouri Western unleashed a lethal second-half 3-point barrage on Central Oklahoma to rally from big halftime hole and hand the Bronchos a tough 88-84 overtime setback Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Griffons made 11-of-16 shots (68.8 percent) from beyond the arc in the final half, hitting the last one with 2.7 seconds left in regulation to force a 76-all stalemate.

UCO led 81-80 with 2:16 left in the extra session, but MWSU scored six straight points to take the lead for good in handing the Bronchos their first defeat in five OT games this season.

"That was a tough one to take," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "Obviously they really got it going with their 3-point shooting in the second half and we just didn't finish the game.  We had our chances to put it away and didn't get it done."

The loss ruined a sensational effort by Seth Heckart, who made 7-of-10 long-distance shots and a pair of free throws in scoring a team-high 23 points to go with four rebounds and two assists.  The senior sharpshooter moved into fifth place on UCO's all-time 3-pointer list with 210.

Garen Wright made 7-of-12 shots in a 16-point outing and Cornell Neal added 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The Bronchos appeared in control at halftime with their big 44-25 lead, but Cole Clearman four 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half to quickly get MWSU back in the game.

The Griffons outscored UCO 26-6 in the first seven minutes of the final half to go up 51-50 and had a 56-52 lead at the 10:36 mark.

It was back-and-forth the rest of the way, though the Bronchos went up by five (72-67) on a short Neal jumper with just 1:09 remaining.

Wright's layup had UCO up 74-70 at 0:41, but the Griffons hit a 3-pointer at 0:24 to get within one.  Neal made two foul shots with eight seconds left to made it 76-73 and the Bronchos fouled MWSU before it could attempt a tying 3-point try at 0:05.

That backfired when the Griffons rebounded the front end of a one-and-one free throw and Miles Wentzien drained a 25-foot trey with 2.7 seconds left to tie it.

UCO had a 81-80 lead with 2:16 left in OT after a 10-foot baseline jumper by Jarred Bairstow, with MWSU scored the next six points to go up 86-81 at 0:17.

Jordan London nailed a corner 3-pointer at 0:07 to pull the Bronchos within 86-84, but the Griffons clinched the win with two free throws at 0:03.

UCO returns to action next Wednesday at Emporia State.
