UCO Edges Science & Arts Monday Night In Hamilton

EDMOND - Hustle plays in the final minutes propelled Central Oklahoma to a 67-64 victory over the University of Science & Arts on Monday night in Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos (5-2) held a slim lead for most of the second half. Science & Arts' Taran Buie hit a 3-pointer with a little over three minutes to play to make it 59-56 when the Bronchos decided effort was going to win them a game.

Jordan London took a 3-pointer on the next possession, and got his own rebound before finding Marquis Johnson for a three. Buie hit a jumper on the other end to make it 62-58. Back on offense, Johnson took another three and missed, but London was there again for an offensive rebound.

London missed a jumper that would have made it a six-point game, and Buie hit two free-throws on the other end to cut it two. Now with under two minutes to play, London missed another jumper and this time Corbin Byford got the offensive rebound. He was fouled in doing so and on the next play, London sank another 3-pointer to make it 65-60.

UCO grabbed one more offensive rebound as the final minute faded away and the Bronchos took the victory.

"Those are always the kind of plays that win you ball games," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "Whether it's at the end of the game or in the middle or in the beginning, doing those things gives you a chance to win. We didn't play nearly our best basketball tonight, so it was a good thing they came up with plays like that."

Johnson led the Bronchos in scoring Monday for the second time this season. The freshman guard scored 14 points and added four assists in 36 minutes played. Josh Holliday chipped in 13 including 3-pointers. And Byford had a stellar game with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

The Bronchos hit nine from 3-point range on the day. They did it on 29 shots, a rough 31 percent from deep, but the big plays on both ends of the floor got it done for Central.

The Bronchos are just beginning a big week of action. UCO plays at Southwest Baptist on Thursday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play before returning home to face Mid-America Christian in a non-conference clash on Saturday.
