Bronchos get hot hand, beat Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Central Oklahoma beat Southwest Baptist 80-71 Thursday night in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play behind a balance of scoring in which four starters scored in double figures.

Corbin Byford led the Bronchos (6-2, 2-1) with 16 points. Jordan London and Marquis Johnson each had 14, and Jake Hammond added 10. Josh Holliday was the only starter not to score in double figures, and the sophomore finished with eight.

The bench mimicked the first team too. Every Broncho scored on Thursday night, UCO's third-straight win. Isaac Leggins and Cooper Clark each had six, Corey Alpough had four, and Xavier Howard, playing in his first game of the season, had two.

"That kind of team effort is what we need," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "It's hard for any defense to keep up with you when everyone is having a good night. But we still have some things to work on. We need to get better at putting teams away. This game ended a little closer than I'd like."

Holliday hit a 3-pointer on the game's first possession, two minutes in UCO led 5-0 after a Hammond basket, and the Bronchos never looked back. UCO led 37-26 at halftime, never trailing in the first half. And Hankins' bunch wouldn't let up in the second half either, carrying a wire-to-wire lead to its sixth win of the season.

Byford's 16 points paced the Bronchos Thursday. The senior added three rebounds and two blocks. London did nearly all of his damage from the outside. Of his 14 points, 12 came off 3-point buckets.

Johnson was efficient at the point too. He had 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal in leading a Bronchos attack that as a team shot 54.7 percent from the floor - 52.6 percent from behind the arc.

The Bronchos return home and take a break from MIAA play Saturday, hosting Mid-America Christian at 3:30 p.m. in Hamilton Field House
