UCO Crushes RiverHawks

EDMOND (Dec. 3) – Demari Edwards and Cooper Clark combined for seven points in the final 20 seconds of the first half to put Central Oklahoma in total control and the Bronchos went on to a 91-58 drubbing of Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO closed the opening half with a 13-0 run, capped by the frenzied spurt that saw Edwards can a short jumper and then make a steal and driving layup before Clark swiped the inbounds pass and drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

That gave the Bronchos a huge 26-point cushion at 48-22 and the outcome was already decided.

UCO ended a two-game losing streak with its most lopsided win since early in the 2014-15 season, improving to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  The RiverHawks fell to 2-5 and 1-1.

"I thought we came out with a lot of energy today and really got after it defensively, especially in the first half," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "Offensively, we did a great job moving the ball and finding the open man."

Six players scored in double figures for the Bronchos, who shot a season-best 55.7 percent from the field and had assists on 21 of 34 made baskets.  UCO flourished from long range, setting season highs for makes (13) and attempts (26).

Edwards led the balanced attack with 16 points while adding three assists and two steals.  Marquis Johnson had 13 points, Josh Holliday made four treys in a 12-point outing and Jake Hammond had 12 points.

Clark also scored 12 points and had a perfect shooting game, going 3-of-3 from the field with two 3-pointers and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.  Jordan London enjoyed a stellar all-around game with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Bronchos never trailed, though it was tied twice early at 3-3 and 5-5.  Hammond's layup broke the second deadlock, with another layup by Johnson and a Holliday 3-pointer following a Corbin Byford blocked shot quickly giving UCO a 12-5 lead.

Edwards' corner trey pushed the advantage to 10 (20-10) just seven minutes into the game and it was a 13-point lead (35-22) with 4:34 left before the Bronchos finished the half with 13 unanswered points to blow the game open.

Hammond had a pair of layups and Corey Alpough a 10-foot jumper to start the run that was capped by the closing 20-second sequence that made it 48-22 at the break.

The RiverHawks got no closer than 21 in the second half, with UCO stretching its lead to 44 (91-47) in the final minutes before NSU scored the last 11 points of the game to arrange the final margin.

The Bronchos are back in action Monday, ending a four-game homestand with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
