UCO holds off Southeastern in overtime

EDMOND - Central Oklahoma beat Southeastern Oklahoma State 71-68 in overtime Sunday night in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and Great American Conference Challenge. The Bronchos improved to 2-0 with the win.

Jordan London hit two free throws to begin the extra period and put UCO up 64-62, and the Bronchos wouldn't trail again. UCO got lay-ups from Corbin Byford and Demari Edwards, two free throws from Jake Hammond and another from London in overtime. London's third free throw put UCO up 71-68 with 14 seconds left.

The Bronchos almost stole the ball from Southeastern when freshman Marquis Johnson stripped it away from the defender. But Southeastern jumped on the ball and called timeout with 1.2 seconds on the clock. Southeastern inbounded the ball and heaved up an off balance desperation three at the buzzer and missed.

London finished with a team-high 16 points. Byford added 14, and Edwards 13.

"We've got some guys that just won't give up," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "There was a time it looked like we were going to get beat, but they weren't going to lose. They made some big plays on the defensive end, and that's what won us this game."

The Bronchos trailed by four with just under two minutes to play in regulation after Johnson turned the ball over and Jose Libanio scored to make it 60-56. Byford then made a layup, and later a free throw to cut it to a one point game.

With Southeastern inbounding the ball under its own goal, Johnson made one of the biggest plays of the night.

Southeastern's Jett Jobe was set to throw the ball in, Johnson was guarding him. As Jobe made his overhead pass, Johnson leaped straight up into the air and stole the ball.

He then scurried down court on a fast break, when with 12 seconds left, he hit London for a 3-pointer from just below the wing. That made it 62-60 UCO.

"Marquis, man he just makes big plays," Hankins said about the freshman, who just a few months ago was leading Putnam City West High School to a state championship. "That kid can play."

Anton Cook drew a foul with five seconds left, and hit both free throws to tie the game. Johnson went coast-to-coast in that time and got up a decent look as the second-half buzzer sounded, but it missed and the teams went to overtime for the second straight season.

UCO has most of the week off before hitting the road for the first time this season. The Bronchos next play at Dallas Baptist on Saturday, Nov. 19.
