Bronchos Sweep Missouri Southern

EDMOND (Oct. 7) – Ijeoma Njenje collected seven of her career-high 14 kills in the third set to fuel a come-from-behind triumph that gave Central Oklahoma a sweep of Missouri Southern Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 10-ranked Bronchos prevailed 25-11, 25-18, 25-22 for their 16th sweep of the season, improving to 18-1 overall and 5-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  The Lions fell to 4-15 and 1-5.

"Ijeoma gave us a big boost in the third set and I was proud of the way we battled back after being down most of the time," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It wasn't very pretty and we made a lot of mistakes that hurt us, but we got the job done."

UCO trailed most of the final set and was down 16-11 before mounting its final comeback.

Lyndsey Becker and Taylor Bevis had back-to-back kills to spark a 7-1 run that gave the Bronchos the lead at 18-17 and it was tied at 19 when Becker hit a bullet down the line to put UCO on top for good.

Ijeoma had two kills the rest of the way as the Bronchos went on to close out the match for their fifth straight win.

UCO grabbed a quick 8-1 lead and was never tested in the opening set, with Bonnie Vernon serving up three of the team's five service aces.

The second set went back-and-forth early before Becker and Jordan Spence teamed up for a block to break a 7-7 tie and give the Bronchos a lead they never relinquished.

Ijeoma finished with a .345 attack percentage as the sophomore outside hitter had 14 kills and four errors in 29 attempts while adding five assisted blocks.

Becker hit .333 with nine kills and Taylor Bevis had six kills in limited action.

UCO also got 34 assists from setter Katy Davis and libero Dominique Lipari had 17 digs to once again lead the defense.

The Bronchos conclude a five-match league homestand Saturday, hosting Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m.
