Bronchos end regular season with 3-0 drubbing of Missouri Southern

EDMOND - Central Oklahoma beat Missouri Southern State 3-0 in the final game of the regular season on Sunday at Tom Thompson Soccer Field.

The Bronchos (12-5-1, 8-3-0) finished third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. UCO will host its first-round game of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. against Emporia State.

UCO lost to Missouri Southern in September in a non-conference matchup between the schools. Katie Killion wasted no time on Sunday avenging that loss.

In the second minute of play, Killion was pressuring the defense not far from the Missouri Southern goal. An MSSU defender tried to play the ball back, and Killion worked her magic to create a turnover. From there, the Bronchos' leading scorer had an easy shot for her eighth goal of the season.

UCO continued applying that pressure throughout the first half, and outshot Missouri Southern 9-4 in the first 45 minutes. Just before halftime, the Bronchos added another score.

In the 44th minute, Haley Post was the forward applying causing problems in the Missouri Southern box this time. And after a scurry for the ball, Post flicked a pass behind her to Camrie Hurst, who put home her fifth goal of the season.

Mikayla Lowery scored her fifth goal of the season in the 57th minute to make it 3-0. Kenzie Sublett sent in a cross to Lowery right in front of the Missouri Southern goal. Lowery brought it down, made a move, and slid the ball into the back of the net for the score.

As good as Central Oklahoma's offense was on Sunday, its defense was even better. The Bronchos recorded their fourth clean sheet in the last six games. Ally Salls made four saves in goal. The sophomore started for the Bronchos. Elle Stover came on in the 64th minute in place of Salls and made one save.

UCO only gave Missouri Southern the chance at six shots on the day, five of which were on target but saved. Now the Bronchos turn their attention to the postseason.

The MIAA Tournament begins Wednesday with the top-eight teams in the league playing in a single elimination bracket. The top-four teams host the first-round games, and the semifinals and championship will be hosted by the highest remaining seed after Wednesday's competition.
