Bats Come Alive In UCO Sweep

ADA, Okla. (Jan. 30) – Power-packed Central Oklahoma used a pair of late-inning eruptions to sweep a season-opening doubleheader from East Central here Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos banged out 34 hits in taking 10-3 and 15-5 victories, scoring nine runs in the final three innings of the opener to overcome a 3-1 deficit and breaking away from a 5-5 tie in the nightcap with 10 runs in the last two frames.

"Those were two good wins for us and it was a great way to start the season," said third-year head coach Cody White, whose team was eliminated from last year's national tournament by the Tigers.  "We're a pretty good offensive team with strength up-and-down the lineup and that showed today."

Catcher Tori Collet, returning to the lineup after missing last year to injury, went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead a 16-hit attack in the 10-3 first-game win.  Morgan Heard, Lexi Watson and Ashton Smith added two hits apiece.

Nicole Brady earned the pitching win, coming on after UCO fell behind 3-0 early and giving up just four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Bronchos trailed 3-1 entering the fifth inning before exploding for eight runs on seven hits.  Smith had the big blow with a three-run home run that gave UCO the lead, while Watson added a two-run double.

Collet ended the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth to made it 10-3 and Brady finished out the game.

Watson's two-run homer gave the Bronchos a quick lead in the second game, but ECU tied it in its half of the inning.  JoBi Heath put UCO back on top with a two-run single in the second, with the Tigers pulling even with two runs in the third.

The teams traded runs in the fifth to stay deadlocked before the Bronchos took charge with a five-run sixth.

Heath's two-run homer broke the tie as UCO went up 10-5, with Carli Jones ripping a three-run dinger and Heard a two-run double in the seventh to make it 15-5.

Heath went 4-for-5 with four RBI to pace an 18-hit assault.  Watson had three hits, with Heard, Smith and Collet adding two apiece.

Jessi Walker went the distance in the circle to earn the pitching win, striking out six and walking just one.

The Bronchos return to action next weekend with five games at the Southeastern Oklahoma Classic in Durant.
