UCO Falls To Hot-shooting Tigers

HAYS, Kan. (Jan. 16) – Fort Hays State took control early and rode uncanny 3-point accuracy to a 91-74 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory over Central Oklahoma here Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers hit three long-range bombs in the opening two minutes to grab a 9-0 lead and the Bronchos never recovered in falling to 8-9 on the season and 4-7 in the league.

FHSU, which improved to 13-4 and 7-4, made 15-of-22 attempts from beyond the arc for a sizzling 68.2 percent while also outrebounding UCO 32-18.

"We came out flat and they jumped all over us," said head coach Tom Hankins, whose team had a three-game winning streak snapped.  "We had played pretty well the last three games, but I was really disappointed with our defensive effort today."

Jordan London and Garen Wright scored 14 points apiece to lead the Bronchos, with London making 4-of-5 from 3-point range and Wright adding four rebounds.

Cornell Neal and Corey Alpough had 11 points each, while Trai Jordan chipped in eight points and five rebounds.

FHSU increased its early 9-0 lead to 13-2 in the opening minutes before UCO got five points from London and an Alpough layup in a 7-0 run to get within 13-9.

It was still a four-point deficit at 22-18 after a Jarred Bairstow tip-in at the 8:34 mark, but the Tigers scored seven unanswered points to go up 29-18 and went on to take a 42-32 lead into halftime.

Seth Heckart hit a 3-pointer early in the second half to pull the Bronchos within 42-37, but FHSU quickly pushed its lead back to double digits at 47-37 and steadily pulled away from there.

UCO, which played nine of its first 11 conference games on the road, returns to Edmond Thursday to host Southwest Baptist and open a seven-game MIAA homestand.
