No. 6 Mavericks Blank Bronchos

MANKATO, Minn. (Sept. 6) – An opening-minute goal put Central Oklahoma in an early hole and the Bronchos never recovered in dropping a 5-0 decision to No. 6-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato here Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks, who went 22-1 last year in reaching the NCAA Division II national tournament quarterfinals, scored just 38 seconds into the game and added another goal eight minutes later in quickly taking control against a youthful UCO squad.

MSU-Mankato outshot the Bronchos just 18-14, but UCO failed to connect with the nine shots on goal it managed.  Eight of those came in the second half, but the Mavericks repelled every shot.

"We played poorly in every aspect the first half," head coach Mike Cook said.  "You can't give up a goal in the first 30 seconds to anyone, let alone one of the top teams in the country.

"We played much better in the second half and it was a good learning experience for the team.  We definitely have a young group and will continue working on putting things together."

The Bronchos return to action Thursday, traveling to Weatherford to face intrastate rival Southwestern Oklahoma at 4 p.m.
