Fast Start

ST. LOUS, Mo. (Sept. 4) – A proven veteran and untested rookie sparked Central Oklahoma to a pair of sweeps on the opening day of the Maryville Invitational here Friday.
 
Senior All-American Barbara Jackson had 27 kills and freshman Taylor Bevis 22 as the Bronchos downed the host Saints (25-21, 25-20, 25-13) and Southern Wesleyan (25-19, 25-15, 25-18).  UCO completes the season-opening event Saturday with matches against Henderson State and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
 
"Our returners provided good leadership and we came out with two good wins," said head coach Edgar Miraku, who led UCO to a 28-5 season last year.  "We played pretty well overall and got good contributions from a lot of players."
 
The Bronchos hit .357 in the win over Maryville, collecting 46 kills against just 11 errors in 98 attacks.
 
Jackson hit .423 with 13 kills and two errors in 26 attacks, while Bevis had an impressive start to her college career with 12 kills and only two miscues in 24 attacks in hitting .417.
 
UCO also got six kills from Allison Barr and five kills and two solo blocks from freshman Jordan SpenceKaty Davis dished out 38 assists and Whitney Gifford had 20 digs.
 
The Bronchos trailed 20-18 in the late stages of the first set against the Saints, but Bevis had three kills while Spence added a solo block and kill as UCO used a 7-1 run to rally for the win.
 
Barr broke a 12-12 tie in the second set with a spike at the net to put the Bronchos on top to stay and UCO seized control early in the third set en route to closing out the match.
 
Jackson had 14 kills and only one error in 36 attacks to hit .361 in the win over Southern Wesleyan.  Bevis chipped in 10 kills, Spence had nine and Barr contributed six kills and four blocks.
 
UCO trailed 15-14 in the first set before Bevis had a block and kill to put the Bronchos on top to stay.
 
Jackson had three kills and Gifford a service ace to fuel an early 8-0 run that gave UCO control in the second set, with the Bronchos using a 13-3 run to overcome an early 8-5 deficit in the third to polish off the sweep.
