Brunson Sets Hits Record In UCO Sweep

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (April 3) – Kaylee Brunson became Central Oklahoma's all-time hits leader to pace an offensive assault that powered Central Oklahoma to a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader sweep of intrastate rival Northeastern State here Friday.

The Bronchos pounded out a season-high 18 hits in a 17-4 first-game rout and rallied for a 9-5 win in the nightcap behind a 17-hit attack as Brunson went a combined 7-for-9 at the plate from her lead-off spot in the lineup.

The speedy senior outfielder, who already owned school career records for at bats, runs and stolen bases, surpassed Kacie Edwards in the first game for the hits record.  Brunson now has 273 hits, breaking Edwards' record of 268.

"Offensively we did a great job swinging the bats today," head coach Cody White said.  "We came out aggressive and stayed that way all day to come out with two good road wins.  Kaylee did what she usually does at the top of the order for us and she's very deserving of every record she gets."

Ashleigh Tramel belted a solo home run and Ashton Smith a two-run double to help stake UCO to a 5-0 lead after three innings of the opener before the Bronchos erupted for 12 runs in the fourth to break the game wide open.

Central paraded 16 batters to the plate in that big inning and had 11 hits, highlighted by Ally Dziadula's grand slam and run-scoring single.  Brunson, Tramel, Emily Ditmore and Devyn Frazier added RBI hits in the big inning that made it 17-0 and the game ended after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Brunson and Dziadula had three hits apiece to pace UCO, while Smith, Tramel, Ditmore and Frazier all had two hits.  Kelsey Berlin gave up five hits in the pitching circle to pick up the win, improving to 9-5.

The Bronchos trailed 3-1 after one inning in the nightcap, but came back to tie it on Brooke Zukerman's RBI double in the third and Smith's run-scoring single in the fourth.

UCO went ahead 4-3 on Zukerman's lead-off homer to center field in the fifth and then pushed the advantage to 9-3 with a five-run volley in the sixth as Dziadula and Heard had RBI doubles.  The RiverHawks scored once each in the sixth and sixth, but it wasn't enough.

Brunson, Smith and Zukerman all went 4-for-5 to top the offense, with Dziadula adding three hits and Morgan Heard two.  Nicole Brady went the distance to pick up the pitching win, scattering seven hits.

The Bronchos, now 25-12 on the season and 10-4 in the league, hosts NSU for a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday.
