UCO Splits Twinbill With Jennies

EDMOND (April 11) – Morgan Heard drove in six runs to lift Central Oklahoma to a second-game run-rule rout that gave the Bronchos a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader split with Central Missouri here Saturday afternoon.

UCO committed three big errors that led to four unearned runs in a 7-4 first-game setback before rebounding to take the nightcap 12-4, ending the game on the eight-run rule in the fifth inning on Heard's two-run double.

The Bronchos, who had won nine straight games and 15 in a row at home before dropping the opener, are now 32-13 on the season and 13-5 in the league.  The Jennies are 30-12 and 12-4.

"We made a bunch of mistakes in the first game and it's hard to overcome that against good teams," head coach Cody White said.  "We didn't play our best in the second one, but we put a lot of pressure on them and came out with a big win."

Heard had a pair of two-run doubles, an RBI fielder's choice and a run-scoring groundout to spark UCO in the second game.  The rookie shortstop moved into second place on the school's single-season doubles list with 17, two off the record.

Central Missouri pushed across two runs in its first at bat in the nightcap, but the Bronchos responded quickly with a three-run volley in their half of the inning to move on top for good.

Speedy Kaylee Brunson scored the first run when she beat the throw home on Heard's grounder to shortstop and Emily Ditmore gave UCO a 3-2 lead with a two-run single to right field.

The lead was 6-4 entering the fourth and the Bronchos took control there with a four-run outburst as Heard ripped a two-run double off the fence in center field.  Shelby Carel plated Heard with a bloop double to right and then stole third before scoring on an error to make it 10-4.

UCO then ended it in the fifth on Heard's looping two-out, two-run double to left field that scored Ashton Smith and Brooke Zukerman.

Kelsey Berlin picked up the pitching win, giving up five hits while striking out three and walking one.

The first game was tied 1-1 after two innings, but the Jennies scored a pair of unearned runs in the third to go ahead 4-1 and UCO never caught up.

The Bronchos got a run back in the fourth on Ashleigh Tramel's long solo home run to left field – her league-high 13th of the season – but UCM got two runs in the fifth and one in the top of the seventh to take a 7-2 lead.

UCO got RBI doubles from Devyn Frazier and Smith to pull within 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, but the last-ditch rally fell short.

The Bronchos ended up with 10 hits, getting two each from Smith, Heard, Carel and Frazier.
