Berlin Pitches UCO To Split

EDMOND (April 18) – Kelsey Berlin's second-game pitching performance allowed Central Oklahoma to split a key Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader with Washburn here Saturday afternoon.

The Ichabods pounded out 18 hits and scored nine runs in the ninth inning for a 14-5 win in the opener before Berlin gave up just five hits in the nightcap as the Bronchos prevailed 6-1.

UCO, now 33-14 on the season and 14-6 in the league, wraps up the regular season home schedule Sunday with a 1 p.m. twinbill against Emporia State.

"Kelsey really came through for us in a game we had to have," head coach Cody White said.  "Washburn can swing the bats and they showed us that in the first game, but Kelsey pitched well and we came up with a few clutch hits to get a big win."

Berlin struck out five and walked just one in her 11th complete-game outing of the season.  The senior left-hander gave up a solo home run in the seventh inning to lose her shutout bid, but needed just 85 pitches in improving to 11-5.

The Bronchos took the lead in their first at bat when Kaylee Brunson drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored one out later on Ally Dziadula's single off the first base bag.

It stayed 1-0 until the fourth when UCO erupted for five runs to take control.

Shelby Carel started the scoring with a two-run single up the middle, Brunson added a two-run double to center field and Ashton Smith added an RBI base hit to right field as the Bronchos went up 6-0 before cruising in.

Brunson and Ashleigh Tramel had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit attack.

RBI singles by Morgan Heard and Brunson along with three Washburn errors allowed UCO to build a 4-0 lead after two innings of the opener, but the Ichabods came back to tie it at 5-5 in the fifth.

Both teams had plenty of scoring chances the next few innings, but it stayed deadlocked until the top of the ninth when WU sent 12 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on six hits to earn the victory.

The Bronchos finished with eight hits, getting two apiece from Brunson and Heard.
