Bronchos Take Two

EDMOND (March 8) – No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma relied on offensive outbursts early in each game to claim a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Western Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings in a 6-3 first-game win and bolted to a big 8-1 advantage after the first two frames in an 8-4 second-game triumph to sweep their second straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association twinbill.

Nicole Brady and Kelsey Berlin had complete-game pitching outings in the sweep as UCO stretched its winning streak to five straight in improving to 13-5 on the season and 4-0 in the league.

"We started strong in both games, but then seemed to let off a little bit and that's something we can't afford to do," head coach Cody White said.  "I thought out defense was pretty solid today and both pitchers did a good job."

The Bronchos pushed across three runs in each of the first two innings to jump on top 6-1 in the opener.

Morgan Heard's two-run double keyed the first-inning uprising, while Ally Dziadula ripped a two-run double and Brooke Zukerman added a sacrifice fly in the third as UCO took early control.

The Griffons made it 6-3 in the top of the third and then neither team scored again.

Brady gave up seven hits in going the distance while striking out four and the junior right-hander also made three splendid defensive plays in catching hard-hit line drives back to the circle to improve to 7-2.

Carel had two of UCO's six hits in the opener.

The Bronchos came out strong in the second game as well, scoring three times in the first and five in the second to jump on top 8-1.

Brunson led off the first with a triple, Carel followed with an RBI double and Ashton Smith added a two-run single later in the frame to make it 3-1.

UCO took control with its five-run uprising in the second, getting run-scoring hits from Brunson, Carel, Dziadula and Smith.

The Bronchos didn't score again and MWSU scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to get within 8-4.  The Griffons loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Berlin speared a line shot for the final out of the game.

Berlin gave up 10 hits and fanned four in evening her record at 2-2.  Brunson, Carel, Zukerman, Smith and Ditmore had two hits each to lead an 11-hit attack.

UCO goes on the road Tuesday for a doubleheader at Rogers State before resuming league play Friday at Lindenwood.
