Berlin Pitches Bronchos To Split

LAWTON, Okla. (March 31) – Kelsey Berlin's dominating performance in the circle enabled Central Oklahoma to gain a doubleheader split with intrastate rival Cameron here Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 19-ranked Bronchos fell 8-0 in the opener before Berlin shut down the high-powered Aggies in a 6-1 second-game victory, limiting No. 25 CU – ranked third in NCAA Division II with a .361 team average – to just three hits.

"Kelsey threw a great game against a really strong hitting team and we got out of here with a good split," head coach Cody White said.  "I was proud of the way we put the first game behind us and came out ready to play."

Berlin retired the first 10 batters of the game before giving up a one-out solo homer in the fourth.  The senior left-hander benefitted from two outstanding defensive plays, with Morgan Heard making a tough over-the-shoulder catch in short left field from her shortstop position in the second and Brooke Zukerman ending the fourth with a sliding grab in right field that stranded two runners.

Berlin struck out five and walked just one in the 101-pitch outing, improving to 8-5 with her eighth complete game of the season.

UCO jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap after Zukerman and Heard led off with back-to-back base hits.  Emily Ditmore was hit by pitch to load the bases and Rachel Harper drew a two-out walk to force in one run before Kaylee Brunson drove in the second with a bloop single to left field.

The Bronchos added three runs in the third on Heard's six home run of the season.  Ally Dziadula started things with a double to right field, Zukerman followed with a single to left and Heard made it 5-0 with a bomb to center field.

Zukerman upped UCO's lead to 6-0 in the fourth when the speedy junior outfielder reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and raced all the way around to score on a wild pitch.

The Aggies got their lone run in the fourth with a one-out homer that ended Berlin's perfect game, but CU managed just two other hits.

Heard led UCO's 10-hit attack with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Zukerman and Ashton Smith added two hits each.

Cameron made short work of the Bronchos in the first game, banging out nine hits in ending the game on the run-rule after five innings.

The Aggies scored twice in the first inning, made it 3-0 in the third and then pushed across five runs on four hits and three walks in the fourth to go up 8-0.

UCO's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fifth after Emily Ditmore's lead-off double to left-center field gave the Bronchos a chance to extend the game.  Pinch-runner Kourtney Tanner went to third on a grounder to second, but was stranded there by a strikeout and pop-out.

Ditmore, Brunson and Zukerman had the only hits for UCO.

The Bronchos, now 23-12 on the season, resume Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Northeastern State.
